Would it be too soon to say my favorite metroidvania is Timespinner? >.>

(PS: I'm not from the future, but if I was I wouldn't say that I was anyway ~_^)

I'm really hyped about Ghost Song. It looks very, very metroid'ish. =)

I'm surprised you didn't mention Axiom Verge.

I either never heard about it or forgot (like in case with Chasm once I hear it is random generated).

Probably my first contact with Metroidvania game was watching my older cousin playing Castlevania.
At that time, I knew it as Akumajyo X (or something like that, I'm not sure if I spelled it correctly), later, I learned that it was known as Castlevania: Symphony of the Night in North America.

Later, when I was studying in US, my friend and I bought Metroid Fusion together, and I got so into it that after beating it for the first time, I kept doing it for time attack. I believe my best time to beat the game was about 1 hour, of course, not 100%

Played also the Zero Mission, had lots of fun, but never figured out how to get 100% item rate.

During my college years, I came by recent Castlevania series, the Portraits of Ruin and Dawn of Sorrow, it....was okay, but I felt like they were stretching the story from original a little too far.

I know it's not the most acclaimed in the series, but I loved Portrait of Ruin personally.

Portrait of Ruin was by far the best DS Castlevania title, in my opinion. I'm also a bit partial to whip users in Castlevania, though.

Hmm. Hard to list them all ~laugh~

Castlevania-

Order of Eeclesia
Portrait of Ruin
Dawn of Sorrow
Aria of Sorrow
Symphony of the Night
Circle of the Moon
Harmony of Dissonance
Lament of Innocence

I think that covers it for ones that I've played that i really liked there.

Metroid-

Super Metroid
Metroid Zero Mission / Original
Metroid Fusion
Metroid Other M (I know the story sucks but I enjoyed the game play darnit :p )
Metroid Prime series
Metroid II Return of Samus

So basically... all of them?

For Non-Directly named Metroidvanias-

Shantae - Risky's Revenge
Clash at Demonhead
Shovel Knight (I think it kinda counts?)
Producer of Spinners of Fate and other Youtube Content.

The art style and music were always pretty important to me for metroidvania games.
Order of Ecclasia (Castlevania) was one of my favorites, though it was more linear which I wasn't a fan of.

Also the story is pretty important to me too, but I've found plenty of metroidvania's with bad stories/no stories that were still good. OoE is a good example of a great game with a bad story.

However I'm reading through this board and seeing a few I wasn't already aware of and liking them. Ghost Song looks great for example.

Then of course there's Super Metroid which I still occasionally play, and SotN and a few other castlevania's.
There's a "hentai" Metroidvania, but all the hentai stuff is optional (the only way you'll see it is if you' do it on purpose) called Nightmare Sphere that was really good for its time. The sequel never did end up coming out though.

I have always wanted to design my own metroidvania :(
