New Game+ Ideas

Postby MetalShadowOverlord » Thu Jul 31, 2014 6:01 pm

I had an idea for a change that could happen for New Game+. What if the game increased in difficulty each time you completed the game? Now, I'm aware this has been done in other titles like Rogue Legacy, and some of this is also inspired by the "make monsters extinct" feature in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, but here is my reasoning behind it: Given how Lunais is basically rewriting history, what if history actually tries to correct itself? There's a saying when it comes to time travel, and just time in general: Some things were never meant to be. So, for New Game+, history has corrected itself, reverting everything back to the way it was, but history has made a counter-measure to deter future time travelers from making any, shall we say, editing, in the form of making individuals and monsters from the affected time periods stronger. The cycle continues, the game getting harder and harder until reaching a difficulty cap, as the player continues beating New Game+.

What do you guys think? A good idea or an unnecessary proposal?

Hrm, an interesting idea, but considering many Metroidvania games are main projects for speedrunners, that could make things rather problematic. If there was always an option to choose your difficulty, I wouldn't mind an unlock difficulty only playable in NG+.

Sounds like a pretty cool concept if you ask me.
Maybe there could be other differences besides stronger enemies, like, maybe items can work differently, there could be more/less weapons, power-ups, familiars, etc.

I understand your point. I guess allowing the player to choose if they want to start a new game at a harder difficulty or stay at the present difficulty would be for the best, but, assuming you're allowed to keep items you got from your previous playthrough in NG+, then perhaps it would be for the best if continuing at a harder difficulty caused you to lose those items, but continuing at the current difficulty allowed you to keep them?

I really like this idea as well! Maybe other areas can open up too, like secret areas that couldn't be accessed in normal difficulty?

Sounds kinda like the new game plus idea in Valkyrie Profile 2. Every playthrough of the game (up to 50) added extra difficulty in the way of harder scaled enemies, etc. I dig it.

The concerns brought up could be simply handled by offering a "revision" option when launching a NG+ - from "revision 1" (the first NG+) to "revision n", where n is the number of completed playthroughs.

In regards to New Game +, I would really like it if we could take the Chrono Trigger route, where theres an optional event or series of events in the game, which ends the game suggesting that Lunais has to go back and try again, or fix something. Not only does this scratch a multiple ending itch, but it also explains why New Game + is a logical reality.

Chrono Trigger is universally considered one of the best RPG's ever made, get on it! Definitely one of my favorites overall in the genre.

And it's relatively easy to obtain these days. You can get it on DS, PS1, SNES, and I think there were digital releases on PS3 and Wii. :D
